IPTV on Apple TV and iPhone: Which Apps Work and How to Set Them Up

Le 27 Oct, 2026

Setting up IPTV on Apple TV and iPhone is not harder than on Android, but it is different: there is no sideloading, the App Store rotates players regularly, and some apps are limited on tvOS. After installing dozens of lines on Apple devices, we have settled on a short list of players that behave reliably, and a set of iOS and tvOS settings that avoid the two most common complaints: stuttering on Wi-Fi and an iPhone that gets hot after twenty minutes. Here is the full procedure, from the App Store to a working channel list.

IPTV on Apple TV: the apps that actually work

The players below are independent applications available on the App Store. They do not include any content; you log in with the credentials delivered with your subscription.

App Apple TV (tvOS) iPhone / iPad Login methods Notes
IPTV Smarters Pro Yes Yes Xtream Codes, M3U Familiar layout, EPG, catch-up when the server supports it
Smarters Player Lite Yes Yes Xtream Codes, M3U Same engine as Smarters, fewer options, often the one listed on the store
IBO Player Yes Yes MAC address + device key Activation done from a browser, convenient for several lines
GSE Smart IPTV Limited Yes M3U, Xtream Codes Good for playlists with custom EPG, older interface
iPlayTV Yes No M3U, Xtream Codes Paid, clean tvOS design, excellent remote navigation

TiviMate does not exist on Apple platforms, and Kodi is not on the App Store. If a friend recommends one of those, they are using Android.

Step 1: install and log in on Apple TV

  1. On the Apple TV, open the App Store, search for the player (for example IPTV Smarters Pro or Smarters Player Lite) and install it.
  2. Launch the app. On the first screen choose Add User or Login with Xtream Codes API.
  3. Enter the three items from your welcome message: Username, Password and Server URL. The URL must be typed exactly, including http:// and the port number (for example :8080). The Siri Remote keyboard is slow; use the Apple TV Remote on your iPhone (Control Centre) to type with the phone keyboard.
  4. Press Add User. The app downloads the channel list, then the VOD catalogue; on a long playlist this takes thirty seconds to a minute.
  5. Open Live TV, choose a category and start a channel.

If the app prefers an M3U link, use the Load your playlist or file/URL option and paste the M3U URL. On tvOS, the paste command is on the on-screen keyboard; copying the link from an iPhone to the Apple TV works through Universal Clipboard if both devices share the same iCloud account.

Step 2: the same thing on iPhone and iPad

The procedure is identical, with one addition: iOS asks for Local Network permission the first time the app runs. Accept it, otherwise some players fail to resolve the server. If you refused by mistake, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network and enable the app.

On iPhone, also enable Picture in Picture inside the player settings if available; it lets you keep a match in a small window while answering a message.

Step 3: settings that make the difference

Choose the right decoder

In IPTV Smarters Pro and Smarters Player Lite, open Settings > Player Settings and look at the Live TV decoder. The options are usually Native and VLC-based. On Apple TV 4K, Native uses the hardware decoder and is the right choice for HEVC streams. Switch to the VLC engine only if a specific channel shows a black screen with sound.

Fix the stream format

In the same menu, the Stream Format option offers Default (TS), M3U8 (HLS) and sometimes MPEG-TS. Apple devices handle HLS very well: if a channel stutters on TS, try HLS. Change one setting at a time and test on the same channel so you know what helped.

Buffer size

Where the app exposes a buffer, set it to a medium value (2 to 4 seconds). A larger buffer hides small Wi-Fi hiccups at the cost of a longer channel change.

Audio

On Apple TV, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and set Change Format to Off unless you use a receiver. Forcing Dolby on a TV that does not support it causes silent channels.

Wi-Fi, Ethernet and the heat issue

Apple TV 4K has an Ethernet port on the higher-capacity model. If your box sits near the router, use a cable: it removes the single biggest cause of micro-freezes on Apple TV. On Wi-Fi, connect to the 5 GHz network and keep the box out of enclosed cabinets.

On iPhone, heat comes from software decoding. If the phone gets warm, check that the decoder is set to Native, lower the screen brightness while watching, and close other apps. Battery drain is normal at roughly the same level as a video streaming app; a 4K channel uses noticeably more than an HD one.

Parental lock and privacy on Apple devices

If your line includes the optional 18+ package, lock the relevant categories in the player’s Parental Control menu (Smarters) or hide them (IBO Player Pro). On a shared iPad, add a second layer: Settings > Screen Time > App Limits can require a code to open the IPTV app itself. Details on how the package is delivered are on the IPTV Adult page.

Common errors on iOS and tvOS

  • “Invalid credentials” while the same details work on Android: a space was added at the end of the username when pasting. Delete it.
  • App disappeared from the App Store: it happens. Your login works in any other player in the table; nothing is lost.
  • Channels load but no VOD: Smarters Player Lite hides VOD until the first catalogue sync is finished. Wait, then pull down to refresh.
  • Black screen with sound: switch the decoder, then the stream format, in that order.
  • EPG empty: in Settings, update the EPG manually once; subsequent updates are automatic.
